Spend the December school holidays with De Hoop Collection and know that you will be enjoying quality family time in a magical outdoor setting!

Head off to De Hoop Nature Reserve (a comfortable three hours drive from Cape Town) this summer, where you and the kids can have all your usual home comforts, plus a myriad of amazing activities and picturesque sites to visit – enjoy the interpretive rock pool and Fynbos walks, while the more adventurous can experience the extensive hiking and mountain biking trails.

The full programme of Kiddie Activities (children’s rates apply to 12 years and under) includes:

Daytime activities:

Rock and Roll (1 ½ – 2 hours) – a fun and educational guided activity exploration of creepy crawlies that live under rocks – R50 per child; Track Hunting (1 ½ – 2 hours) – a new guided activity that has the children searching for animal tracks, which are captured in plaster-of-paris as a memento – R65 per child. Both these activities are facilitated by an experienced field guide; the fun and educational 1 hour long treasure hunt, Nature Quest, which has the kids exploring the De Hoop Opstal and Vlei areas, where they have to solve riddles to find the clues that lead them to a treasure – R50 per child; and the Marine Walk (scheduled at low tide) – an exploration of the rocky shores and pools of De Hoop Marine Reserve. The De Hoop guide will share fun facts on things found on the beach and the kids can draw the things they have collected and seen (shells, starfish, whales and other interesting marine life). The cost is R150 per adult and R50 per child and you can book a breakfast (or lunch) picnic basket for the family for R250.

Evening activities:

Star stories and smores under the night sky: listen to myths and legends about the starry constellations and African animal stories, while roasting marshmallows around the fire (R50 per child). For the intrepid explorers, the Night Adventurer, an interactive night walk with a De Hoop guide, to look for scorpions and other creatures of the night armed only with a UV light – cost: R50 per child and R80 per adult.

The indoor activities will appeal to the budding chefs and those who enjoy being creative: Mini Chefs -kids get to roll out the dough and create their own pizza with delicious toppings and create their own special cupcakes with icing and toppings (R80 per child); and Creative Nature – kids can make and decorate clay model of whales and other animals found at De Hoop Nature & Marine Reserve, while the younger kids can colour in their own starfish or ostrich with their own De Hoop Collection activity book – the cost is R80 per child.
