A three-hour drive from Cape Town along the pretty wine route is De Hoop, a nature reserve set among a dramatic and deserted backdrop. For the energetic there are hiking and biking trails that get you up close to the abundance of wildlife including antelope, zebra, baboons and ostrich. On the water you can snorkel in the summer and whale-watch from the sand dunes in the winter (July-October).
