“Who lives in the tidal pools along the rocky shore of De Hoop?” 28 – 31 May
Join Professors Liesl and Jo van As – world experts on Life in the Intertidal Zone, the area between high and low tides. This is a harsh habitat which is subject to the rigours of both sea and land, yet there is an extraordinary diversity of life in this area, especially at De Hoop marine reserve.
Fascinating facts and observations about the plants and creatures that survive through adaptation will keep you absorbed as you further explore the zone. De Hoop Reserve is one of the world’s most pristine rocky shores with the largest biodiversity of intertidal creatures anywhere in the world! This coast is home to 11 of southern Africa’s 18 limpet species. The southern African marine zoogeographical province has more limpet species than any of the other 15 marine provinces of the world and all of them are endemic. You will see creatures in De Hoop that are found nowhere else in the world!
Guests can order delicious picnics at Koppie Alleen, lunch at the delectable Fig Tree Restaurant, enjoy a complimentary high tea under the magnificent fig tree on the reserve, cocktail hours enlivened with informal lectures about sea creatures and the shore’s biodiversity and a splendid potjie dinner on the last night. Under the microscope, all will be revealed
